On October 28, 2026, Shopify launched native WhatsApp marketing automations directly inside Shopify Messaging as part of its Fall 2026 Editions release. For ecommerce brands, this means abandoned cart, abandoned checkout, and browse abandonment recovery messages can now be sent through WhatsApp without any third-party app, directly from the Shopify admin, with zero additional monthly fees beyond WhatsApp's per-conversation messaging costs.
WhatsApp open rates consistently outperform email by a factor of 3 to 5 times in most markets. Shopify is now making it possible to recover abandoned carts through that channel without requiring separate app subscriptions or API integrations. For brands that sell into markets where WhatsApp is the dominant messaging platform, including Europe, Latin America, India, and the Middle East, this is a direct revenue recovery tool that can run alongside your existing email flows from day one.
Shopify launched three pre-built WhatsApp automation flows at launch. The Abandoned Browse flow triggers when a shopper views products but does not add to cart. The Abandoned Cart flow fires when items are added to a cart but checkout is not started. The Abandoned Checkout flow runs when a shopper begins checkout but does not complete the purchase. All three flows use dynamic content templates that automatically pull in the shopper's name, product title, and a direct cart recovery link. Setup is inside your Shopify Admin under Messaging, then Automations.
The native Shopify integration removes the need for a separate WhatsApp Business API provider subscription, a third-party automation app, and manual template approvals. Shopify handles the Meta WhatsApp template registration and compliance requirements through the integration. Brands that were previously paying for a standalone WhatsApp marketing tool can evaluate whether the native flows cover their core use cases. For advanced segmentation, multi-step sequences, or flows that go beyond the three built-in triggers, third-party tools will still offer more flexibility. But for most brands, the native flows handle the highest-impact recovery scenarios.

To activate WhatsApp automations in Shopify Messaging, your store must have the Shopify Messaging feature enabled, which is included with all Shopify plans. You will need to connect a WhatsApp Business account through the Shopify admin setup flow. Meta requires WhatsApp Business API access, which Shopify manages on your behalf through the integration. Your messages will need to come from a WhatsApp Business phone number, and Shopify will guide you through phone number registration during setup. Costs per WhatsApp conversation are billed by Meta based on the recipient's country, with marketing conversations carrying a higher per-message rate than utility or service conversations. Shopify itself does not charge additional fees for the feature beyond your plan.

The feature itself is included with all Shopify plans at no additional charge. However, WhatsApp charges per-conversation fees based on the recipient's country and message category. Marketing conversations, which include abandoned cart and checkout recovery, carry a higher per-conversation rate than utility messages.
Brands selling into Europe, Latin America, India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia will see the highest impact. WhatsApp is the dominant messaging platform in these regions, and open rates often exceed 80 percent compared to email averages of 20 to 30 percent.
Yes. Shopify manages the WhatsApp Business API connection on your behalf through the integration, but you do need a Meta Business Account and a WhatsApp Business phone number. Shopify will guide you through registration during setup.
Shopify's native templates include dynamic variables for shopper name, product title, and cart URL. Deeper customization, multi-step sequences, or flows triggered by events beyond the three pre-built triggers will require a third-party WhatsApp marketing tool integrated with your Shopify store.
Meta requires explicit opt-in consent for WhatsApp marketing messages. You can add a WhatsApp opt-in checkbox to your Shopify checkout, account signup page, or post-purchase flow. Sending marketing messages to customers who have not opted in violates Meta's policies and can result in your WhatsApp Business number being restricted.
